Your first ride in Thailand
Start before the engine does: keep left, check your equipment and documents, and leave enough room for a safe ride.

Keep left
Thailand drives on the left. Reset your position after every turn and when leaving a parking area. Check the direction of traffic before joining the road.
Helmet and seat belts
Both the rider and passenger need a properly fitting helmet with the chin strap fastened. In a car, wear your seat belt. Check safety equipment before collecting the vehicle.
Speed and space
Follow the limit for your road and vehicle. Slow down for traffic, bends and poor visibility, and leave room to react. A posted maximum is not a target in difficult conditions.
Changing lanes and passing
Look, signal, check mirrors and blind spots, then move only when clear. Normally overtake on the right where permitted and safe. Keep out of large vehicles’ blind spots.
Rain, hills and wet roads
Ride more slowly, brake and steer smoothly, and increase your following distance. Avoid flooded routes. Choose hills, bends and road conditions within your riding ability.
Phones, alcohol and fatigue
Set the route before moving. Stop somewhere safe and legal to use your phone. Never drink and drive. If tired, stop and rest before continuing.
Before collecting the keys
Check brakes, tyres, lights, mirrors and insurance. Carry a licence valid in Thailand for your vehicle and an IDP where required, together with your original licence. A car-only licence does not cover motorbikes. Medical emergency: 1669. Police: 191. Tourist Police: 1155.
